Favorite Tips from The Crosscultural, Language, and Academic Development Handbook

  • Understand that you are not only helping students academically but that you may also be helping families adjust.
  • Openly communicate acceptance of students and be accessible to them.
  • What groups are represented in texts, discussion, and bulletin board displays? Are certain groups invisible?
  • Are the problems faced by minorities presented in a realistic fashion, with a problem-solving orientation?
  • Solicit parents' views on education through a simple questionnaire, telephone interviews, or student or parent interviews.
  • Provide a written outline of key content from lecture notes to reduce the amount of copying.
  • To help with spelling, use a word wall with commonly used words that students would already know.
